The Experience

Avalon Rocky Hills Retreat

Even though Rocky Hills Retreat is just 2 kilometres up a gravelly dirt driveway it feels like a million miles away. Once you pass through the Rocky Hills' stone gates the 250 acres of dry sclerophyll bush closes around you.

The Retreat provides a safe platform from which to engage with nature, to watch the weather roll in, the wind bend the trees, the sun dancing on the sea, the birds going about their business as though you were not there, the biblical sunrises, the amazing gentle light in the valley at dusk and the stars looking as though they have been lowered to greet you - it is all there going on outside while you are embraced by the beautiful elements on the inside.

The rhythm of the Retreat starts with the ever changing glorious pre-dawn light, sit out on the morning deck to breathe in its full depth. With breakfast provisions provided, you can enjoy muesli with yogurt, fresh fruit or eggs and bacon if you wish.
If it is cold you could put on the jackets, boots and gloves that are in the laundry and walk up to the art studio. There you will find lots to do - draw, paint, sculpt, knit, read, play. It is endless. Or simply do nothing - just sit.

How you spend your day at the Retreat will no doubt be all about your mood - what takes your fancy, nowhere to be - nothing to do!
How rare!

There is a beautiful Huon Pine bath tub out on the evening deck - it smells delightful and holds its warmth for a long time (we have not been out in less than an hour and a half). It takes about 30 minutes to fill, so start it early enough so as not to miss the sunset - a glass of sparkling and into the warm bath - it really is heaven. The owls and possums will keep you company.
Rocky Hills Retreat's bed will be waiting for you - it is lush - layers of comfort surrounding you.
I suppose you could always lift the veil of Rocky Hills Retreat and go back to the other world and visit the delights of Swansea and the Freycinet Peninsula however, it seems as though people just never want to leave.

Rocky Hills Retreat

11901 Tasman Highway
Rocky Hills, Swansea
Tasmania 7190

106 kms (1 hour 30 minutes) North East of Hobart Airport
135 kms (1 hour 45 minutes) South East of Launceston Airport

If you are driving from Swansea:

Enjoy the beautiful scenery, Spikey Bridge, Kelvedon beach, pass Kabuki By the Sea, down the wiggly bits of the road when you arrive at Avalon (the glass house on the headland) which is on the left hand side - you turn right at the next driveway which is only 100 meters further along from Avalon.

If you are driving from Orford:

After about 30 minutes you will hit the water of Great Oyster Bay and Mayfield Camp Ground and the road narrows and starts to climb up a small hill. You will see the Rocky Hills township sign - turn left at the next driveway only about 600 meters along from the Rocky Hills sign.

Congratulations you have made it to the driveway! Go over the small stone bridge (circa 1830s) stay on the small corner of asphalt and then on to the gravelly driveway (we suggest you leave the Porsche at home) - head up the hill - it is 2 kms from here - it may seem like 10 but just keep going - following the RHR signs continue on past the turn off to the Lair - up the hill past the driveway to the Murray's, continue on past the Rocky Hills stone gates - up the hill for another 600 meters to the next Rocky Hills Retreat stone sign - turn left, you are nearly there, past the stone cairn (oval shaped sculpture) - and down over the rise. Yippee!
